Guides
How Much Gravel Do I Need?
Quick Answer
Measure area, choose depth, calculate cubic feet, divide by 27 for cubic yards, then multiply by the supplier's tons-per-yard density.
Practical Guide
Gravel estimates start with volume, but many suppliers sell stone by the ton. That means density matters, and density changes by stone type, size, and moisture.
For planning, use 2 inches for decorative cover, 3 inches for many walkways, and 4 inches or more for heavier use after confirming base requirements.
Gravel Formula
Area square feet x depth feet = cubic feet. Cubic feet / 27 = cubic yards. Cubic yards x tons per cubic yard = estimated tons.
Example: 240 square feet at 3 inches deep is 240 x 0.25 = 60 cubic feet, or 2.22 cubic yards. At 1.4 tons per cubic yard, that is about 3.11 tons before extra.
Supplier Notes
Ask whether the quoted density is loose, compacted, dry, or damp. A local supplier can also tell you whether the material is suitable for paths, driveways, drainage, or decorative beds.
| Depth | Use | Planning note |
|---|---|---|
| 2 inches | Decorative cover | Good for low-traffic beds and accents. |
| 3 inches | Walkway | More complete coverage for foot traffic. |
| 4+ inches | Heavier use | May need compacted base and edging. |
FAQ
How many tons are in a cubic yard of gravel?+
Many gravels are roughly 1.35 to 1.5 tons per cubic yard, but the supplier's density is the best number to use.
How deep should gravel be for a walkway?+
A 3-inch gravel layer is common for light walkways, often over a prepared base and edging.
Do I need extra gravel?+
Ordering 5% to 10% extra is common for uneven ground, compaction, and measuring differences.
Can I calculate gravel by bags?+
Yes, if the bag lists cubic feet or coverage at a certain depth. Bulk projects are usually easier to estimate by cubic yard or ton.
