Mulch Calculator
Quick Answer
Enter area, depth, bag size, and extra material to estimate mulch in cubic feet, cubic yards, and bags.
Mulch Calculator
Estimate mulch volume in cubic feet, cubic yards, and bags.
Formula Explanation
areaSqFt = calculated area in square feet. depthFt = depthInches / 12. cubicFeet = areaSqFt x depthFt. cubicYards = cubicFeet / 27. cubicFeetWithExtra = cubicFeet x (1 + extraPercent). bagsNeeded = ceil(cubicFeetWithExtra / bagSizeCuFt).
Example Calculation
A 12 ft by 8 ft bed is 96 square feet. At 3 inches deep, depth is 0.25 feet, so 96 x 0.25 = 24 cubic feet. With 10% extra, the estimate is 26.4 cubic feet, or 0.98 cubic yards. With 2 cubic foot bags, round up to 14 bags.
| Depth | Use | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 2 inches | Light refresh | Good over an existing layer. |
| 3 inches | Standard weed control | Common target for planting beds. |
| 4 inches | Heavy coverage | Use carefully around plant crowns and trunks. |
FAQ
How does the mulch calculator work?+
It calculates area in square feet, converts depth from inches to feet, multiplies area by depth for cubic feet, converts to cubic yards, and divides by bag size for bag count.
What mulch depth should I use?+
Use 2 inches for a light refresh, 3 inches for standard weed control, and 4 inches for heavier coverage in new beds.
How many bags of mulch are in one cubic yard?+
One cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, so it is about 14 two-cubic-foot bags or 9 three-cubic-foot bags.
Should I include extra mulch?+
A 5% to 10% extra allowance is common for settling, uneven ground, and measuring differences.
