How Much Mulch for a 10×20 Flower Bed?

Project Assumptions

This example uses a rectangular flower bed and common bagged mulch sizes. Actual bed edges, plant spacing, and existing mulch depth can change the final amount.

• Flower bed size: 10 ft x 20 ft
• Total area: 200 square feet
• Common mulch depth: 2, 3, or 4 inches
• Bag size used in examples: 2 cubic feet
• Extra material allowance: optional 10%

Step-by-step Calculation

Area = length x width. Area = 10 x 20 = 200 sq ft.

For 3 inches of mulch, depth in feet = 3 / 12 = 0.25 ft. Cubic feet = area x depth = 200 x 0.25 = 50 cu ft.

Cubic yards = 50 / 27 = 1.85 cu yd. Two-cubic-foot bags = 50 / 2 = 25 bags. With 10% extra, 55 cu ft / 2 = 27.5, so round up to 28 bags.

Practical Buying Notes

A 3-inch mulch depth is a common choice for fresh coverage and weed control. If the bed already has an old mulch layer, 2 inches may be enough for a refresh.

For a new bed with bare soil, 3 inches is usually a practical starting point. Add 5-10% extra if the bed has curves, uneven edges, or multiple planting areas.
